“Back to Our Roots: Nature’s Language” (2024)

This collaborative project explores how an artwork can extend beyond the gallery and into the museum retail environment. We selected Cui Fei’s Manuscript of Nature V (2022), composed of plant tendrils arranged like calligraphy — marks that resemble language yet resist fixed meaning.

We abstracted its gestural qualities into a spatial and graphic system. Organic line forms were translated into typographic interventions across signage, postcards, receipts, and merchandise, integrating the artwork’s visual language into the gift shop.

To test this expansion, we built a scaled corner model of the store. Suspended line forms and directional lighting cast shadows that evoke “roots,” demonstrating how Cui Fei’s work could grow into the architectural space itself.

The project reframes the gift shop as a continuation of the exhibition — where commerce and interpretation intersect.
